A classic Explorer!
I was at my watchmakers today and he pulled a vintage Explorer he was working on out of the safe. It was an all original orange hand Explorer II 1655. I've never seen a bezel like that. I didn't take any photos because it wasn't my watch and didn't ask for permission. Sam told me it's a bit tough to find all original pieces like this because Rolex frequently put modern hands or dials on them when they serviced them. The guy was offered $20K for it but turned it down for sentimental reasons (I think Sam said it was a gift from his father). This is one of the few times I agree with calling it "patina" instead of dirt. It wasn't cruddy, just evenly aged. I can see why you guys appreciate vintage Rolexes like I'm into Omega & JLC.

Independent Watchmaker vs. RSC
My Y serial Sub is from late 2003, so it's about 6 years old and probably ready for a service. It run a tish fast, but consistent, although out of COSC specs. The case is nicked and scratched up pretty good. I wear it as my beater watch. Any reason why I shouldn't use a local independent watchmaker who has (or had, but currently has a large inventory of parts) a Rolex parts account? One guy I was recommended charges about $300-400 to service a Sub Date. He will refinish the case and bracelet as part of the service. The RSCs charge about $550. Why not save up to a few hundred bucks? I was also recommended another local watchmaker who charges $175. Now that seems too cheap. I had a bad experience with the NY RSC, so if I go the RSC route, I would use Dallas.

Another 5205g in the bag

The posted threads did help convince me to go for this Patek model, my first one after a string of Panerais and Rolexes.As mentioned earlier, I was "smitten" by this model upon seeing the print ads in my local AD watch magazine. That was around January when I pulled a trigger on another watch and was given an annual copy of their magazine.At around that time, my whole horology world was revolving around Rolex Day-Date on rhodium dial.
