I liked Ben's little competitions, so I'm going to try a few. What do you think this is for
OK, I'm not getting that much time to watch hunt these days; maybe a few times a week to ebay and a prowl around the usual vendors. But boy o boy, when I do get there - the cupboard is bare!My usual ebay search has returned about 700 hits for the past year or more. Last week or two - 510. And what a bunch of dross. Bulk lots of tired movements and tired watches; movements with cases presumably scrapped for gold. One or two models of interest but sheesh, not a good time to have money burning a hole in your pocket. (And with the Aussie dollar now above parity with the USD it is TIME TO BUY!So what is it? Economic conditions in the US? Nice and sunny so everyone is outside - when they should be inside posting watches at online auction sites?
Spin-RAnyone familiar with these winders?
I stopped by the Omega boutique in L.A. last week...and got into a nice discussion of the Speedmaster Professional with the staff. I've been a fan of that watch since I was nine--back in early 1974, when my father bought one and explained its significance in the Apollo missions. The reason I was at the boutique was to pick up that very watch, now sporting a black leather strap, a change up from the original bracelet. The technician brought out a brand new Speedmaster. Not the Professional, but the 2012 reissue of the First Omega in Space. Slightly smaller. Lemania movement. Manual wind. Brown leather strap. Sapphire crystal, a nod to the present technology. I tried it on. Perfect fit! The Professional is just a little bit on the large size for me. Certainly wearable, but not ideal. This Speedmaster, though, seemed made for me!No discounts at a boutique, but they did sweeten the deal with a few incentives, including full service in my old Speedmaster Professional with no charge.
