The Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Geneve is the Swiss watch making industry's award night (though not all the nominees are Swiss brands) celebrating and awarding the previous year's most interesting watches in a few categories. The awards are slanted to high-end timepieces, but there is a category for timepieces that are more entry level at just a few thousand dollars. The Grand Prix categories are: best men's watch, best ladies watch, best design concept watch, best jewelery watch, best complicated watch, best sport watch, and a category called "Best Small Hand" which I believe is for the best watch under a certain price.Check out the list of nominees here, and please to comment with your personal picks for the best watches below. The GPGH will be held on November 18th, 2010.
I feel as though I have a duty to tell people about less well-known brands that offer meritorious watches. Paul Picot is one of those brands that most of you have probably not heard of, but can appreciate the looks of their flagship men's watch, the C-Type.A watch that uses this many squares ought to get a prize. I hesitated, but opted not to picture the square (tank) face version of the watch as that might be considered to be overkill (actually, I will go ahead and throw the picture on here). Instead, you can appreciate the geometry in this watch easily with a round face, but otherwise abundantly placed square elements. The watch is actually a well finished diving watch with a lot going for it. The lug styling is a likely source of inspiration for the Hublot Big Bang designers (at they look almost the same as on the Paul Picot th

BusinessWeek magazine ranks Rolex #71 on its 2007 annual list of the 100 most important global brands, top among all watchmakers.
Chatting watches with a colleague in work today about Rolexes, and he got talking about his safe queen Omega Ploprof 600. The bracelet is completely unworn in brand new condition with not one scratch and the watch itself he reckons only a handful of times on the other strap which is incredible since its from the early 70's. He sourced it from a collector in Israel. When he recieved he had it serviced and authenticated by Omega just to be sure. Whilst it was away Omega phoned him as they wanted to buy the steel bracelet of him. They hadnt got this particular strap on show in their museum and wanted it as it was split new. He declined, saying he would only sell the whole package, wise move I think. Hes a bit of a dark horse when it comes to watches, with impeccable taste I have to say. He also has a Sub and a Sea Dweller to keep the Omega company in the safe! Anyways hes going to bring the Ploprof into work next week to show me in Person, but he emailed me a few photos of it in
