There are 3 types of materials commonly used for watch crystals: plexiglas, mineral glass, and synthetic sapphire. The harder the material, the more scratch resistant it is. However, as the hardness increases it becomes more difficult to polish and more susceptible to cracking and shattering. Sapphire crystals are the hardest and most expensive of the bunch, consisting of the same thing that the jewels in your watch's movement are made of: corundum. The only harder element is diamond. These crystals are 3 times harder than mineral glass and up to 20 times harder than plexiglas. Corundum is crystallized aluminum oxide (Al2O3) and is clear in it's pure state. I do not have the watch yet, but I need to find out the model #, thanks in advance
Some of you may recall I recently bought my grail (again) after selling one for the ceramic Daytona. My grail is the white gold Daytona with panda dial. I started a thread and said...I think I’m done. A couple of months ago I was tempted (thanks to Nairn) by a 1972 ‘birth year’ GMT Pepsi. I fell in love with the look of it, but I struggled with the light and delicate feel of vintage and also the serial number 290XXXX may not even be my birth year of 1972. I have therefore traded the 1675, a Breitling and a Tag Heuer against a ‘new old stock’ White Gold BLRO GMT dated 29th December 2016, it will be with me on Thursday......after this, I really think I will be able to say I really am done with 2 awesome white gold modern Rolex. Pics on Thursday.
