A. Lange & S?hne Unveils its Grand Complication at SIHH
Avid fans and collectors of A. Lange & S?hne are now one step closer to their Holy Grail: the German watch brand announced at the SIHH in Geneva that it will release its long-anticipated Grand Complication wristwatch this year ¡ª and, from the standpoint of complications, it looks to be even more than many expected.For a watch to meet the traditional criteria of a grand complication, it must include, in addition to hours, minutes and seconds, a perpetual calendar, chronograph, and minute repeater. Lange’s Grand Complication goes above and beyond these requirements. Its chiming mechanism includes a grand sonnerie and petit sonnerie in addition to a minute repeater; its chronograph is a monopusher with a split-seconds function and jumping seconds; and its perpetual calendar includes a moon-phase display.The watch’s two hand-wrought gongs produce the sound of the minute repeater and of the hour and quarter-hour strikes. Celebrating Connoisseurship With A. Lange & Sohne Watches
Back in early 2009 I visited A. Lange & Sohne's manufacture in Glashutte. It was actually the first watch manufacture I visited, and now almost three years later I have much to compare it to. It is actually a shame that I saw Lange's manufacture so early in my career because I did not properly know how to appreciate it at the time. Don't get me wrong, I was thoroughly impressed during my visit, but I would have been much more impressed had I seen other places first that don't necessarily deliver the same experience and level of product. Even on a larger scale, Lange is the type of brand you can only really appreciate after getting to know many other watches first. I think that by definition that makes it a connoisseur's brand.This idea gets me thinking about what it means to be a connoisseur and how watches fit into the overall world of connoisseurship. The National Watch & Clock Museum is presenting an exhibit in 2010 on the art of the watch maker, from pocket watches to modern wristwatches. As we've been planning the exhibit, we wondered how many "museum" pieces are in private hands...and whether those hands (wrists actually I guess) would be willing to see them exhibited as part of this great exhibit...Can your watch be exhibited next to a Tompion or Breguet pocket watch from the 18th century or a Blancpain Repeater wristwatch?
