I had a meeting at The British Museum, their Horology department has some 8000 watches but ONLY about 800 on permanent display. One of the watches on 'permanent display' is a Hamilton 1943 used in Maratime navigation, therefore needing the greatest accuracy.,see pictures below. Its worth mentioning that The British Museum has some of the greatest collections from all over the world, like the Rosetta Stone, the 'Elgin marbles (Parthenon sculptures)' the Lewis Chessmen and the Collossal bust of Ramesses the Great.so the Hamilton their is a great honour to American Horology:enjoyadam
This may be a stupid question, but is there a point in servicing the Monster's. At used prices of 150 or so......doesn't that kind of make them disposable? Or is it worth having to pay for a service that is sure to be around the same if not more money than just replacing it.
New to me, but I'm sure most of the WIS have already learned their history.I recently have started reading some of my watch books I bought over the last couple of years...anyways I was suprised that in 1871 there was such a flood of inferior fake watches comming from the Swiss as copies of American made watches that Congress passed a law requiring all watches to be marked with the country of origin thus originating the labels such as "Swiss Made".At first the Swiss tried to make the labels so small they would not be noticed. They also tried putting it on the movement so it might escape notice. Ironic I thought, since I often see debates today about what comprises a Swiss made watch.I also learned there were 2 (apperantley unrelated) IWCs...one in America and another in Switzerland started by and American F.A. Jones from Boston using American made machinery. It, Jones, went bankrupt and it was then put under the supervision of a New Yorker. He was later "removed" and it was then put
I just got word that our Mascot has safely landed in Western Canada after his flight from Georgia. Apparently he needs to get some kind of security clearance to visit the Olympics.
