New Alpha GMT ** HOMAGE WARNING**
This is an extreme Homage warning. If you don't like them, might be best to hit the back arrow on your browser! Now that's out of the way (lol)Ok so I had been looking at the Alpha's and wondered on their quality. So finally I pulled the trigger on a GMT model to check them out. I had heard some good and bad with them so I figured it was going to be a crap shoot.On to the watch.It took about 2 weeks for it to arrive from Hong Kong. Here is the package it came in.It was packed well and arrived undamaged and ticking away. No Box, the watch was in a familiar green pouch. Came with a warranty card (LOL) and an instruction manual, and completely wrapped in plastic.After taking off the plastic, and inspecting it, one thing jumped out at me... they look like SEL's but they aren't. They are hollow end links. Have a look.So that was a bummer. Next odd thing that stuck out was... this isn't a divers watch, and it's only rated at 30 meters, yet it has a divers extension. Shinola Unboxing
My dad retires this year, and I want to get him a watch. He currently wears a Timex EZ reader, and likes the legibility, small size, and accuracy. He feels strongly about supporting American companies, and so when I heard about Shinola, it all came together.So, based on how fast the originals sold out, I ordered him a 40 mm Brakeman (hopefully, not too big - wish they had a 38mm model) even though he doesn't retire until the end of the year. It arrived yesterday, and I haven't seen any unboxing pix or reviews, so here we go (just quickie cell phone pix)It arrived well packed in a branded cardboard box with a nice cover sheet:There is only a paper "wrap" around the wooden box, but with a nice "thank you" note:The unfinished wooden box looks nice:Some foam filler inside to make sure the watch doesn't flop around in transit:The box is nice, with the watch and a small jar of leather balm:Wrist shotInitial review - it's a nice watch! The crisp smell of morning after a treacherous downpour the night before permeated the air as I parked at Valley Fair Shopping Center in Santa Clara California on January 8th, 2017. My New Balance sneakers quickly became water logged as I accidentally stepped into a two inch puddle. Muffled cursing under my breathe escaped me. I was simply making my rounds through Macy's, picking up a few dress shirts and stopping by a Coffee Bean kiosk and off I would be to pick up my kids from my mom's house, who were being watched by her for a few hours. My wife was spending the weekend with two girlfriends at a spa retreat. I savored the few hours of respite, even if it happened to be in a mall. Shirts in tow, I paid for my coffee and made my way down the escalator taking a leisurely stroll enjoying my iced coffee. Then I passed it.
