Watches that offer both solar power and atomic radio time-syncing, I am willing to bet, call to mind for you, as they do for me, watches that hail from Japanese companies ¨C and for good reason. Brands such as Casio have really made atomic solar watches a big part of their portfolio, offering a variety of styles. It might come as a bit of a surprise, then, to learn that German Junghans' Force Mega Solar is not a completely new foray for the brand.It was back in 1990 when Junghans came up with their first radio-controlled watch, and just three years later incorporated solar recharging. For their latest iteration, they've got a series of watches that can sync around the world (with American, German, and Japanese transmitters) and offer a 21-month stand-by capability.While these technical chops are interesting (and of course meet the criteria of a quartz watch doing what a mechanical cannot), it is not the only story here. New GMT II dial irregularity
Or is it just me. I just bought a new 16710 M305xxx serial pepsi and noticed that the dial where the hands are connected is noticeably dished. When I look at my older 16710 D serial the dial is perfectly flat. I have been looking a posted picteures of other GMT's and don't see it in almost all watches. I did notice the dish in one or two of the new ceramics posted but never in any older 16710's. I'd like any of your expert opinions out there as to what you think of this dish and if any of you owners of the new "old" model 16710's have the same thing. My watch did pass the "wiggle" test so I'm confident that it is a 3186 movement watch. It just bothers me to see that the dial may be flawed. If it is a flaw, should I have the dealer repalce the dial?

Quintessential Calatrava-style AP from a different era...
Having recently received this recent acquisition back from independent servicing, I couldn't be more pleased. As the title of the post suggests, this model, to my mind and eye, embodies all of the classic design elements of the Calatrava line of watches made famous by Patek Philippe (and first introduced in 1932). Housed in a simple, yet elegant 35mm case, is arguably the finest hand-wind movement ever produced by AP: the Valjoux-based VZSSc (the sub-second version was VZSS). Cheers, Tony C.

Forged Carbon Diver and its beautiful cousin
I have been going back and forth for awhile on my next AP purchase. I narrowed it to 2 different APs - Diver and Royal Oak, both were missing in my collection, since all my APs are ROO chronographs. It was very hard to pick between SS and FC diver. I love the SS Diver, especially on a bracelet but FC won this time. Here they are, my Christmas presents I will post better pictures once I have a chance to make them in daylight
