Seiko Astron Solar GPS Watch New Design Added For 2014
Seiko has been putting serious resources into the success of their Seiko Astron GPS Solar watch collection that they debuted about two years ago. We've been fans of the techie watch that instead of relying on radio signals from the few terrestrial atomic clocks, connects to signals from GPS satellites. Why? Well to indicate the correct time anywhere in the world of course (assuming you are more or less outside that is). There is a forthcoming watches-dealer review on the Seiko Astron Solar GPS, but until then we can report on a brand new collection of new Seiko Astron watch designs that will be available worldwide next month.According to Seiko, these six new Seiko Astron GPS Solar design options have been inspired by the curvature of the earth. With the same movement inside, these new designs feature a new case, dial, hands, and dramatically curved sapphire crystal. 100 years ago this Sunday marks the centennial for one of the most iconic WWI crystal guards ever made, the Lath Guard.On January 17, 1916 a gentleman named Harry Daw filed a patent application with the United States Patent Office for a "protector for wrist watches".His patent application was later granted on December 11, 1917.Mr. Daw used the word "LATH" several times in the description of his invention so that is what it is called today, pretty simple.Mealy Manufacturing would come out with their version of this guard down the road and they called theirs "The Warrior".There are slight differences between the "Lath" and the "Warrior" guards, mainly the lug design and the number of laths used per size on the guards."Lath" or "Warrior" guards are rarely seen putting them on the top tier of the collectibility shelf, they also carry a pretty hefty price tag.I have had the privilege of having a few of them come across my work bench over the years.These trench watch crystal guards were avai

Finally picked up the new toy / Australian tourism
My new AP, appreciate very mainstream and hardly the top end of the AP world, but it is my first and I really like it, glad I was not talked out of it by talk of it being too big on a wrist, my 7.5in and the 15400 look like they were made for each other.Many thanks to Mitch at the Hourglass in Sydney, a great deal, great service and a man who respects TRF big time.FYI Just as special as the AP is the journey from my home in Balmain by Ferry to the city to pick up the watch, a great day all round, my wife is now wearing my Daytona which was re-sized for her by Mitch as well. Sunny Sydney day, for those that have never visited our amazing city hopefully this is the enabler photos to get you to come (30c / 85f and such blue skies), apparently our architecture is quite well known as well.OK so the downside is we do have the occasional mosquito which has impacted the wrist shot a little!!!
