In the last few years, we've seen a lot of sub $1,000 watches. Within those watches, we've seen a handful of movements, various level of finishing quality, original designs, off-the-shelf designs, homages, etc¡­ As time has gone on, what we look for in a watch has shifted away from straight "value", by which I mean watches that seemingly offer the most expensive components in the cheapest package, to watches that offer quality of concept, design and execution, supported by quality components. So, the latter might cost more for a watch with the same movement and a sapphire, but if it's offering more in terms of design and finishing; and in our eyes, it's worth it.So¡­ When I first saw photos of the Vorque Constantine, who are a new brand out of Singapore, saw the beautiful waffle-textured dial, and read that it was powered by an ETA 2824-2¡­ actually a gilted 2824, I anticipated a certain price. AD vs. Grey Market
I have a new Hamilton coming UPS Monday. When I was doing my web search for the model I checked out AD's (sent request or called for price quote) and Grey market dealers. Best price I could find on the watch that had a MSRP of $475 was $325 (fee shipping) from an AD and $292 (free shipping) from a Grey Market dealer. Going with the AD gets you a full two year Hamilton warranty. Going with the Grey market gets you a full one year "dealer" warranty. Just for info, that dealer has stood by their warranty for a Hamilton they sold me in the past. When you consider the free shipping the AD quote was at least 30% off MSRP. I felt that made the watch a good deal and the difference in price from the grey market was only $33. In the end I felt the extra cash was well spent for the full two year warranty and the fact that warranty is supported by the manufacturer.My obvious question is, what do you think?dealer stock photo of watch

Longines & Wittnauer
Most Wittnauer watches that I see advertised are listed as Longines-Wittnauer, is this fair or are the two brands so far apart in quality that it is not correct to use the Longines name at the same time. I see this a lot lately with Pulsar-Seiko or even Lorus-Seiko. I can remember Lorus being a real cheap brand watch being sold for next to nothing new, now all of a sudden it is like it has gained extra credibility because of Seiko. To me the two brands are a million miles apart. So the question should Wittnauer be mention in the same breath as Longines ?This is my Wittnauer with a 11 ARG movement based on the A Schild 1361 caliber, dates it to sometime in the 50's, runs real smooth and keeps perfect time.
