How can you tell a quality watch?
If you see a watch, what features would be indicative of an above average quality watch*? Without checking the brand name which obviously has a bias effect on perception.* my definition being a modern watch you would expect to retail for >$1500/¡ê1000 based on quality regardless of brand premium. I know that's not all that expensive by WIS standards, but it's an expensive amount to spend on a watch by normal person standards and should reflect an above average quality for the money.I am thinking maybe including the following?...Sapphire crystalApplied indicesCase contours & curvesMixture of polished & satin/brushed finishesPrecious metalBlued hands (heat blued, not painted)Exhibition back revealing a decorated movementOr a nice relief engraved caseback

Tribology is the study of friction and wear. When two gears mesh their teeth slide upon each other. The wheels in a watch are designed to roll on each other to minimize friction, but their surfaces can never be perfectly smooth. Friction causes wear, and wear is also influenced by other factors like corrosion from humidity, salt, and chemicals. Mechanical conditions such as speed, load, and frequency of contact between the two parts will also determine the rate of wear. The case of a watch is designed to minimize any potential for for outside influences to impair the lubricants which would accelerate the wear of the movement. Wherever there is friction between two pieces there is never complete contact between their surfaces. There are always rough sections which reduce the actual point of contact to a small fraction of the total surface area of the contact patch. The ratio between to force it takes to slide one piece across the other and the force of the pressure pushing them together

Question on Reliability of AP
Hi,So I've heard/read quite many horror stories of the reliability of AP in general.However I'm thinking about getting a steel 15400 and a gold jumbo 15202 sometime down the line. My question is how reliable are the 3120 and 2121 movements? I understand they probably need to be serviced more often than say, a rolex, and will also be more expensive to service, both of which are fine by me. I am just worried/concerned with repeated services/malfunctions in short periods of time. I'm not a clumsy person and don't bang up my watch so I expect a service every 3-5 years but don't think I can go with AP if a significant percentage (say over 10%) of AP owners have experienced nightmares/disasters with their new AP watches (3120/2121 movements).Sorry if this isn't a good question but I'm trying to decide if I should stick to Rolex as AP's reliability or lack of, could be the potential deal breaker. New to AP woes... PR issue
Any fellow forumer currently wearing the AP safari range has issues with the PR?I got it new and after wearing the full day from 10am-11pm.. The PR seems like not really working that strong as specs. Didn't wind it thou.Day 2 : Called up APSC, Was advise to wind 50x before wearing and that should support the PR for 50hrs (+-) then when wearing movement of wrist should power the watch as well.Did exactly told, PR still is like few hours, took off watch ytd at around 8pm. Watch stopped at 6am.. Day 3 : did a manual wind of 55 turns. Timed the PR. Wind at 3.20pm watch stopped at 4.10pm.Moment of truth, will servicing resolve this and will it happen again
