Omega Sticker Shock and Discouragement for Newbie
OK folks, while still new here, I've done a little sifting through threads and haven't seen on point discussions for what's discouraging me, so, with your forbearance, I'm going to lay out my questions and concerns. Please feel free to point me toward any threads I should be reading if I've missed them.I was in the market for a new Ball watch, but got sidetracked by Omegas and dropped all consideration of Ball as I became enamored of Omega. I stopped by a Jared yesterday as they are the only authorized distributor of Omega that I know of in the Chicago area. Seeing the Omegas up close and personal was great and reinforced my desire (lust ) for one. On the other hand, the prices stopped me in my tracks. I did not see anything for less than $5k.The most I've spent for a watch so far is $750 for my Hamilton. I'd set aside $2-3k for a Ball, but there is no way the wife will let me spend $5k. My best deal yet!
A couple of weeks ago, I was browsing the new listings on eBay and I saw a watch that immediately caught my interest. Here is a picture:This was the only picture of the dial and bezel and there were only 2 other pictures of the band and caseback. I was pretty sure I knew what it was, and I immediately hit the "buy it now" before I could think about it. Then I waited for it to arrive, hoping I was right and hadn't wastey my money. When it did, I attempted to open the case and encountered resistance so I didn't even try again.I took it to my watch guy and he just confirmed for me today. It is a Hamilton Stanley (probably no surprise to some of you). The case is in amazing condition, the dial appears to be original, and (here is the best part) it contains its original 401 movement! The reason it was so difficult to open the case, he told me, is that it was full of sticky gook (he said the consistency of thick maple syrup). Do you polish your Patek at Service?
First of all, I would like to thank everyone that responded to me in regards to scratches on my 5712. As few days went by I'm definitely ok with it and understand that it's part of owning and wearing the timepiece.My next question, and that down the road, do you believe in polishing your watches.
