A few more cosmetic changes: Consul, Mate, Blackstone
I had to get a few of my Illinois serviced and (in one case) repaired. Also some subtle cosmetic changes.The Blackstone had the side case engravings filled with black enamel paint; the Consul also had the case and bezel engravings filled with black enamel, and the hands relumed; the Mate had the hands redone as well, in an "aged" style. Turns out the hands are not in the best condition, and probably had at least one repair in the past, so looking for another hand set might be an option...I just couldn't stand that bright white lume color that had been on it. NOS Gemex calf strap, too.I don't have a "before" shot of the case side.

Some of my favorite movements are the hacking movements used in WWII military watches. Elgin 532/539, Hamilton 987s, Bulova 10akcsh and Waltham 6/0 '42. I've been searching Ebay for parts and watches. I'm not really excited by the military case forms used for the A-11 and FSSC-88s but I thought I would put together an example of each to compare and contrast with the recased models that were popular after the war. Previously, I hadn't paid any attention to the military watches other that to note that prices seemed inflated by the service related cache. Now I'm studying the watches more closely and have noticed a wide range of offerings from genuine to marriages to outright fakes. I guess high prices lead to all kinds of scams. In a previous post I asked about a wind-at-six Elgin with a U.S. Navy Property dial. I keep seeing these dials as real military issue and suspect they are all wrong. Here is one WW2 ELGIN MILITARY A-11 US NAVY PROPERTY that has a Swiss 629 movement in an A-11 case

Available to buy over the counter, no waiting list, the elusive stainless steel chrono 5980 and, less surprising, a 5711J. The latter at 10 % discount from tag price, which in Bangkok meant US$ 31K something (including the 7 % VAT you can get refunded at the airport) and the former........hrrrrmmm........NOT at a discount, or list, or reasonable price. A big big smile on the sales lady here in the land of a thousand smiles. Very charming. Price just over US$ 69K. No, it's not discount, it's premium. But if anyone really needs to buy a 5980 and want it from an AD, here it is.Is it OK to post prices here? Some other foras are not private shopping services and the moderator is not your private butler etc. Maybe these kind of observations are OK???

Incoming first Omega!!
After I got my first Rolex a few months back I became really interested in some other watches as well, and decided that I wanted to make a Speedmaster my next purchase. Thanks to a great income tax refund, this morning I had the pleasure of opening my first FedEx package with an Omega in it! I picked up a Speedy Moonwatch from DavidSW, whoever owned this watch previously took really great care of it, I couldn't be happier with my new-to-me watch!
