I went today to one of the more upscale watch repair/dealer to get an estimate on repairing a vintage chronograph -$400.00! and that's just for a mainspring. Also to repair a 1880's Hamilton pocket watch $300.00. Admitedly the P/W needed crystal, hands, and a balance shaft but Jeez Louise I can't believe the prices. $200.00 to clean a watch, more if it's a chrono. The days of the old gent with the little bench in the back room is rapidly disappearing. These gents would look at a watch and say, "Yep, mainspring shot, give me a day and I'll crank one out, $40.00 please."
I have been looking at several vintage chronographs lately. I can't help but wonder why are most vintage chronographs/moonphases fitted with solid caseback? Is it because of price or that in those days, people do not like transparent caseback?Just a thought...
I have been trying to get an adjustable clasp for my Speedmaster (version with the screwed bracelet). My local Omega boutique was unbelievably helpful in getting this squared away for me. Here is what we found. There was another thread on here that indicated that the parts required are:Clasp - 117STZ001154End links - 118STZ000015 (quantity 2)We tried this configuration. The clasp is good, however the end links as specified above are from a Speedmaster Mk II, and they are not the correct shape. They fit, but they don't sit properly. The side profile of the Speedmaster link is an oval shape, whereas the side profile for the Mk II end links is a wedge that is very odd. As soon as they put them on, I knew it wasn't right. We then installed the 118ST1589 end links from the Seamaster line, and they fit perfect.So, in summary, you need quantity of 1 (part number 117STZ001154) and quantity of 2 (part number 118ST1589).The total cost of the 3 pieces was $213, and it makes a fantastic watch even
I've been eyeing a Nautilus for a little while now, focusing on the 5711, doing my research, etc. This past weekend I went down to Shreve and tried on a little bit of everything, trying to finalize my decision. In addition to a variety of other brands, I tried on a Nautilus and an Aquanaut, the Nautilus hands down my favorite. A little bit about my watch history for reference. After almost 5 months wait, I got the call/text from my dealer. This watch will be for my wife, but I am still excited to get it for her.Several things mentioned during the conversation with the owner.1. He said he spoke to President of Rolex (maybe North America?) at the Rolex Daytona. Who told him the production will remain the same, but since the demand is higher, watches (sports models) will remain hard to get in 2018.2. Rolex's solution to the shortage is to redesign small show case to hold less watch( how does that solve the shortage?), which I have read in another thread. 3. Price increase is coming. This one he did not hear from the President of Rolex.I was recently in Taiwan visiting. Checked out two large Rolex dealers. Both had ZERO stainless steel sports watches. Not even two tones. One only had a YM2, Gold Sky-D, Diamond dial Daytona. That was it. Pretty sad.
